You Are Here   2008

you are here. dscf5232

The theme “My Place” reminded me about an idea I’ve been incubating for ages, based on the title “You Are Here”.

When I travel I’ve often found myself standing in front of a map with those 3 words on it,  and the words are always strangely comforting to me.

I looked at the place where I am, where I live, on a Google Map picture, and this became part of the design.

Mkuze is one of the wonderful game reserves in KwaZulu-Natal. The inspiration for this quilt came from the small huts, rondavels and dwellings that can be seen when you drive along the roads in Zululand. The quilt shows each home with it's individual character. The fabrics and colours give a clue to the life and environment in and around each home - some are quiet and restful, while others are noisy and busy. The quilt border represents fencing.
